Person 1: I am being oppressed

Person 2: what rights are you being denied?

Person 1: well, one time this person said a mean thing to me

Always reblog this.

a) was it a slur? b) did it attack a part of one’s identity? c) did it attack a part of one’s autonomy? d) was it coming from a place of privilege and denying an individual that same position? e) was it a product of a dominance ideology? f) any combination of these preceding options.

then it’s oppression.

You are retarded

a) A slur (such as “retarded”) can be hurtful and insulting, but it’s not oppression. Yes, even if it comes from a “place of privilege” or perceived privilege. Slurs are terrible words meant to put a demographic of people down, but they are still just words. And while words can and do hurt, you can walk away from them, or you can challenge them with your own.

b) Still not inherently oppression.

c) Still not inherently oppression

d) Denying an individual that same position? If it’s based off of race, sexuality, gender, disability, etc, alone with no other defining factors, then yes, that would be discrimination. However, there are laws against that kind of discrimination in the Western world and any minority can rightfully take a prospective employer to court for said discrimination.

e) The fuck is “dominance ideology”?

Oppression requires action and while it can be argued that words are actions, they are passive actions that by themselves, are not inherently harmful until there is an intent to do harm in addition to those words (i.e. a threat) but they are still only words unless that threat is carried out with a violent action. Even then, it’s not the words themselves that become criminal. It’s the violent action that follows it.

The only exception to that is when a threat is deemed “credible,” usually in the form of planning to carry out said threat.

I love you

i guarantee that youtube-cupcakes wouldn’t consider any of what she said, when used against white people, as “oppression”

so music has been going exceptionally slowly lately. no more than one musical passage or one line written in weeks. several reasons for this, but the main reason is that i am the only one making music. the pressure is all on me and i feel as though my creative well has dried up. also all the musically talented people in my area moved away, and do you know how hard it is to collaborate with someone living 9 hours ahead of you who is A) busy as hell and B) hates you?
