Legion’s Downfall

So several months ago, I wrote a post talking about how much I loved Legion, with the exception of Suramar. Well, now Blizzard has gone and ruined Legion in the worst possible way.

1) Void-lords > everything

First off, let’s talk about the whole lore direction they’re going in. I don’t agree with their making Sargeras a whiny bitch who thinks that he’s doing the universe a favor by destroying it, which is exactly what the void-lords are trying to do. I don’t agree with their making the void-lords the most powerful beings in the universe, because it’s dumb: I mean, if they’re that all-powerful, why are we only hearing about them now (i know they were brought into the canon in Burning Crusade, ie. the Legion Alpha, but they were never really shoved into our faces so much as in THIS expansion)? Also, like with The Last Jedi (spoilers follow), they sacrificed the big bad villain to build up a lesser villain. Which is lame.

2) Illidan did nothing wrong, or did he?

Speaking of the last point, let’s talk about the Hunt for Illidan quest-line. Now, granted, I only got as far as a certain point, but I saw all the flash-backs. And in them, Xe’ra, the prime Naaru, the greatest of the holy beings of the Light, defends most of Illidan’s evil actions as being “necessary evil.” If the Naaru had mouths, I’d accuse her of sucking his dick. What’s even funnier is that, in their whole historical revisionism, they never bothered to cover his two most nefarious actions: creating the second Well of Eternity on Mount Hyjal (what was in the vial), and his willing service to Kil’jaeden in The Frozen Throne.

But then, because the writers want to make Illidan this champion of atheism and make the Holy Light evil, Xe’ra does a complete 180 on Argus and tries to forcibly heal him of the fel corruption. I mean, if he did nothing wrong by accepting the fel and sacrificing his eyes to Sargeras, or by consuming the Skull of Gul’dan in Warcraft III (which we know he actually was in the wrong for doing so), then what purpose is there to cure him? It’s because Blizzard is so up their asses on the tired trope of “good is evil and evil is good.”

3) The child of Light and Shadow mocks the Prophet

Speaking of Argus, the intro video has Illidan with a smug grin mocking Velen’s faith in the Light (that grin was eerily similar to the wicked grin of Xavius as he corrupted poor Ysera). Even in the last video for Antorus, the end of the expansion, Illidan is still mocking Velen for his faith.

Aside from the fact that I, unlike all of you who seem to believe that the student always knows better than his teacher, was raised to actually respect my elders, and therefore believe that Velen should have whacked Illidan over the head with his staff and maybe smite him with the Holy Light a bit, this is just done to shit on a morally good character (which Blizzard seems to be doing a lot of lately). This continues on Argus with the character of Hatuun, which makes absolutely no sense. Velen did not abandon Hatuun, he elected to stay behind and give the other Draenei time to make their departure.

But, as before, Blizzard is obsessed with the whole idea of “good is evil and evil is good”, which also explains why, despite their saying that the void is the new big bad, Alleria becomes the only one to harness the powers of the void without going insane.

Speaking of Illidan being a cheeky cunt, when he does fulfill his role as the Betrayer and kills his number one fan, he is an obstinate little shit about it, saying that it’s always been up to us. And later on Argus, he defends his allegiance to demons by basically saying “you all are too stupid to do this, and i’m the only one with vision to actually do something this brilliant.” No, Illidan, fuck you! This is why Tyrande chose Malfurion over you: because you’re an arrogant, cheeky cunt who struts about, proud of your wickedness, then blames other people when you’re called to account for it.

4) Final Thoughts

I still hate the fact that Sylvanas is Warchief. I also hate that suddenly she’s acting like she cares about the well-being of the Horde: she doesn’t even care about the well-being of the Forsaken, willing to sacrifice them all to prevent her third death. I know Blizzard would like to pretend that they didn’t write her originally as a manipulative, treacherous little shit who was only using the Horde out of convenience and was always plotting to betray them, and that the Wrathgate was therefore her doing (and if not, it shows how incompetent she was that Putriss could have pulled the wool over her eyes for so many months and/or years, and under her very nose even!), but I will never let them forget. Going forward with Battle for Azeroth, I know Blizzard is going to come up with some bullshit excuse for why Darnassus burns that won’t involve Sylvanas causing it, even though she really should be the one doing it. I’m not buying it.

If the nu-lore is right, and Sargeras was just a “misunderstood” whiny bitch and was the only thing stopping the void-lords, then Illidan’s last act of imprisoning him was his final betrayal, because now the “most powerful beings in the universe” are coming for us. I have no sympathy for Illidan.

Blizzard dropped the ball with the whole focus on nostalgia. Legion was Burning Crusade 2.0 (even down to having the Tomb of Sargeras tier gear being graphically enhanced versions of the Burning Crusade gear): I mean, Illidan, Khadgar, naga, demons, Kil’jaeden? Now they’ve dropped it again by announcing classic servers being a thing again. I give it three months before all the fanboys blinded by nostalgia realize that classic WoW wasn’t really as good as they remembered it, get bored, and leave the game altogether, since they obviously won’t be bothering with the new Battle for Azeroth content.

Probably the only good thing is that Thalyssra and the Nightfallen were healed of being crack-heads and even gave up the Nightwell. No crack magic for you! (now we have Alleria and her void-infused crack elves as the next race of elven addicts)
