In 2008 at this point in the year Clinton and Romney were expected to win their respective Iowa caucuses (Romney by roughly the same margins Trump has). Winners Huckabee and Obama.

Gingrich, Cain, Romney, Paul, Perry, and Bachmann (in that order) were all ahead of Santorum, the guy who actually won Iowa.
The lesson. Iowa is a crazy place where polls really are irrelevant even the day before the election.
